The Importance of Keywords

The very first rule of search engine optimisation is to get an understanding of the concept of keywords. SEO relies on your use of keywords and how they relate to your market.

• What are people searching for?
• How are they phrasing their searches?
• Are there variations on the phrase they are looking for?

All of this is important to your effective use of keywords for SEO. Let's look at an example.

If your blog is related to children's clothing then obviously ‘children's clothing' would be your basic keyword. Now, do you sell custom embroidered children's clothing? Or perhaps you sell high end children's clothing, children's clothing for costumes, and the list goes on. These are considered long tail keywords and what your customers might be searching for.

Again, it is all about what a person searching for may type in the search box. "Children's clothing" is a good start but it is just too competitive. Think of ways to bring traffic to your blog with alternative uses of the long tail keyword that won't be so highly competitive.

Blogging for SEO

Now we get to the crux of the matter. Most blogs today are the way to increase traffic to your site. The blog's main purpose is to draw traffic. If you look at the top (usually) of any online business site you will see ‘blog' listed with a drop down menu, or it could be on a side bar. Why is the blog there? Not only to draw traffic for better SEO rankings, which is the primary reason, but to give relevant information on subjects within your niche. Google and the other major search engines have become extremely savvy when ranking sites, so all your content on your blog should be relevant to your market, and your specific niche within that market.

This is the second most important tip on boosting your blog's SEO. Keep it relevant! If your content and keywords are not relevant to your site, it is possible to get flagged as spam. Not only does that lose the potential for rankings but you could also be penalised with the major search engines - and you don't want that at all costs.

There you have it, the two most important tips for working with SEO to boost your blog. Learn how to effectively use keywords with long tail variations and keep all your content relevant. From there, you will learn to fine tune your SEO approach, but without the foundation, the house can come crumbling down.
